In the realm of animal rescue, every mission presents its unique set of challenges.
Whether saving an injured, old, or sick dog from the harsh streets or liberating them from human-inflicted torture, each rescue leaves an indelible mark on our hearts.
However, Masha’s story stands out as an example of the extraordinary strength that defines our four-legged friends.
At the same time, it is a powerful reminder of what people can do when they are deeply moved by compassion and love.
The Rescue Mission
It was a cold, snowy night in December 2016 when our team embarked on a daring rescue mission.
Masha, along with five other innocent souls, was trapped in a place notorious for extreme dog torture.
Determination fueled our hearts as we faced the challenges of an unknown and slippery terrain, shrouded in darkness. The only light guiding us was the glow from our phones, cautiously used to avoid detection by the dangerous human presence.
Masha, a survivor with a spirit stronger than her circumstances, had dug a hole in the frozen ground to shield herself from torture and the biting cold.
As we approached, the chorus of barks echoed through the air, a symphony of fear and desperation.
Each dog, chained with heavy, icy-cold chains, bore witness to the horrors of their shared fate.
The Rescued
Among the captives were two Sarplaninacs, two German Shepherds, one Labrador, and a small terrier puppy. Each one had faced unimaginable cruelty, their bodies weakened and spirits broken.
Almost all of them were cooperative, unwillingly but at least they didn’t resist. They were scared as if another torture was to be expected.
I still carry that picture of a puppy with a heavy, ice-cold chain around the neck in my mind. The poor few-month-old creature couldn’t lift his head to see us.
Masha, in particular, proved to be a challenging rescue. She fought back, biting us in her fear.
This was the first time I had ever heard a dog scream – not growl, not howl, but scream in pain and fear. It was an unimaginable sound that hurt both my ears and heart.
Yes, her scream hurt.
We didn’t have much time and were considering coming back for her later. But we knew that later might never come.
One of us, pulled Masha’s heavy chain to get her out of the hole. Masha was fighting in fear, biting our hands. Somehow, we managed to tie her muzzle, carry her to the car, put her in the lap and drive off.
As soon as she felt the warmth of safety in our arms, her demeanor transformed. Even the muzzle fell off and she enjoyed the ride so much that she didn’t want to leave the warm lap to go to her new accommodation.
The journey to freedom was a slow process. Hungry, thirsty, cold, and scared, the dogs began their recovery in the shelter of our care.
Masha, with a weight of only 15 kilos, painted a vivid picture of the neglect she had endured. Yet, with time, patience, and love, they all began to heal.
Recovery and New Beginnings
In the days that followed, the Labrador and the terrier puppy found their forever homes, and the Sarplaninac dogs discovered the warmth of loving families.
The young German Shepherd, adopted through a friend, thrived in a wonderful home.
However, Masha’s journey to a permanent home was marked by ongoing challenges, a testament to the deep scars of her past.
For five years, Masha lived in a pension, finding comfort, safety, and love.
Though plagued by health issues resulting from her previous trauma, she experienced a level of care and compassion that she had never known before.
In the end, Masha succumbed to a tumor in her belly, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and the enduring impact of our rescue efforts.
