All of my rescues know how it feels to be left alone in the cold, in other words, to be abandoned. The unfortunate feeling is brought about by the irresponsible owners, usually, the ones who use those poor creatures to get at money either by reproduction, hunting or exhibiting them in dog competitions.
What’s more, I know the feeling too because I am faced with this kind of injustice daily. I see it in their eyes that show fear, disappointment, hopelessness and suffering. It is difficult because they can’t tell you anything, and sometimes they survive more than our brains can imagine.
Still, they love humans more than everything. Again they are faithful, obedient and thankful no matter that the humans let them down who knows how many times. They have big hearts full of forgiveness. And what do humans have in return?
Premonition
I have always had a feeling mostly about something bad and sometimes about the good stuff, too. I would either have a dream or just have that familiar unloved feeling. Amazing, one would say, I am always prepared. However, it’s not that simple, but we aren’t here to discuss my intuition. Let’s go back to the point.
On Friday night, I dreamt about a snake, a really big snake. They say a snake in a dream is an enemy. I knew it, the trip wasn’t going to be good! Or was it?
Nonetheless, we had to take it. We rarely go out these days because we usually bring a souvenir, an urgent costly one, from each trip we take. I guess you understand my point, don’t you?
Our Trip
Thus we set out on our Saturday morning trip to visit our family. I don’t like any trips because you always see a lot of abandoned animals on the road, through the towns we go through and ran over in the middle of the roads. Sometimes it can be annoying and people who have been here, know it well. Or maybe I am too sensitive.
However, I tend to do what I can, feed them and move them to a more urban area if they are not urgent cases, or move them from the street if they can’t be helped anymore. That’s all I can do with the limited help I get.
Anyway, that morning was sunny with the intention of rainfall later on. We passed about 45 kilometres and on the left side of the road, we saw a skeleton barely moving. The traffic was crowded with no hard shoulders in our direction to stop and see the poor creature, so we drove off.
We were all moved by that sight and it was the topic of our discussion for almost all 4 hours we spent with our family. It’s not nice when you plan a trip and visit the family you haven’t seen for long and then you are shaken and upset that you can’t even have decent communication with people you love.
Rescue
Having that picture in our minds, we decided to go back earlier than planned. The rain started and triggered our worries that the poor creature might have hidden somewhere and we wouldn’t be able to find it.
Looking through the wet glass, I could see the dogs hiding under the bushes and the luckier ones were allowed under the store awnings. They looked more or less fine.
Finally, we arrived at the location of the skinny skeleton creature with nothing around but a hunting lodge opposite. Guess what? He was walking back and forth, in the same manner, we saw him 4 hours ago, but now all wet and shaking with cold.
Our experience taught us to be always prepared. There is a blanket, several collars and leashes, food, water and always some treats in our trunk.
The most urgent was food, but not so much food because we have a road ahead. Then we put the blanket over him and took him in the car. He was still shaking, but lay down to crouch in the blanket and get warm.
And Now What?
How awesome! We saved a soul. There is the saying He who feeds a hungry dog feeds his own soul. True! It’s wonderful to save a soul. It’s such a great feeling especially when the eyes of the rescue look at you with thankfulness.
Like each time, I first act and then think. Of course, I never regretted that part and I still think this is the right thing to do. You have to react urgently in urgent cases and later on, think about the next move.
As we were driving off, the thought of money crises and the lack of space in boarding homes sank in. My telephone got hot with so many calls I was making to find a solution for him. Luckily, the owner of one boarding house that I cooperate with accepted to take him in. Yay! I was so happy.
Our skeleton boy wasn’t happy to leave the warm car, but he got his blanket and was put in a warm room. He was fed, finally content and went to sleep peacefully.
Sunday was a relaxing day for him too. It was sunny and he sunbathed all day long. I was given a call from an old friend of mine, who said he would take him in and give us the first month free in his dog boarding house that I hadn’t known of till then.
On Monday, the vet did the tests and confirmed that he was negative for diseases. His malnutrition dates from a long time ago because he is anaemic. The edges of his ears bleed because of some kind of infection. He was given anti-flea and deworming treatment and vitamins.
Thus our new boy got his yard and two houses to choose from in this new boarding home. He got meat for dinner and he was happy. However, we left to have some dinner and rest, too.
Finally, Relax
The usual order of things is to put everything on FaceBook, tell people everything and ask for help. My dear friend Sarah Clift proposed the name Charles for our new family member. So Charles he is!
I usually blame our trips for finding urgent animal cases, so sometimes I refuse to go out in order not to see the suffering. However, looking from the other side, that trip saved one life! So this wasn’t my enemy, it made me a hero in Charles’ eye. And for him, my trip was a life-changing experience for him.
It is so nice to save a poor soul that didn’t deserve to suffer at all. My family is happy and my kids learnt a lesson about empathy and the importance of life for every living creature. They also learnt that there are evil people out there and they should take care of themselves because who can starve and abandon an animal can’t be a good man and is ready to do similar things to other people, too.
I have a lot of animals in dog boarding homes and thus a lot of expenses. The support I get is through donations on my FaceBook page. Due to the world economic crisis, donations are cut down as well. So I decided to work for them.
