Dogs don’t have shoes to change. They walk barefoot and their paw pads are exposed to not only weather changes but to rough surfaces too. It is really important to take care of them because they are hurtful and one and only. In case of an injury, it is difficult for a dog to move.

Paw pad protection for dogs is a very important issue that has to be taken care of from the start. There are dog shoes and socks, but I am not a fan of those as dogs don’t seem happy in them, better to say they feel much uncomfortable as it is not their natural condition.

Once, my dog hurt her paw cushion and we put the sock on. She held her leg up and didn’t use it at all because she felt strange. Without the sock, she limped but walked.

There are some natural products that I would strongly recommend for dog skin protection, especially for paws and noses.

Doxel Balm – Natural Balm for Dogs

Doxel Balm is used to moisturise, nourish and protect paw pads and nose skin. It is made of only natural ingredients and eco-friendly products. The natural ingredients are organic camelina oil, beeswax, organic lavender oil and organic coconut oil.

It’s good to use it as prevention even when the paw cushions are in good condition. In that case, the balm nourishes the skin and creates a barrier preventing dryness, cracks and infections.

In cases of dryness, damage or inflammations, vitamin E, omega – 3 fatty acids and vitamin A heal the wounds caused by cracking and beeswax and coconut oil act antibacterially, while lavender not only gives a pleasant smell but also has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects.

Doxel Balm is also very helpful with hyperkeratosis which can appear on the nose, too. My rescued dog Iris has this as a consequence of the distemper she survived as a puppy. Luckily, this is a very mild consequence compared to other dogs that still have tics and shaking movements.

Having explored other markets, I have found a similar product for the US.

Dog Nose Balm

is fragrance-free which makes it easier to apply to dogs’ noses. It looks like a pat on the nose and not an application of some strangely smelling thing that they should get rid of as soon as possible.

Being made of natural products, Grapeseed Oil, Shea Butter, Olive and Wheat Germ Oil, Beeswax, Calendula and Vitamin E, this Italian balm is a lick-safe product.

Dorwest Skin Balm

has an old tradition, dating since 1948. It’s a natural handcrafted balm with 100% natural products. Calendula, Comfrey and Chamomile, naturally grown in the UK, together with jojoba and sunflower oils make it a perfect treatment for the skin. The enjoyable element is brought about by the natural rose geranium, lavender and essential oils.
