On a chilly Sunday, November 10th, 2019, a routine drive turned into a life-saving mission. We spotted two tiny puppies darting across the motorway, oblivious to the dangers of speeding vehicles.
Our hearts raced as we pulled over, thinking it would be easy to scoop up these little furballs. However, their fear drove them to flee, one narrowly avoiding a van, which I had to stop abruptly, much to the driver’s displeasure.
Undeterred by the commotion, we focused on rescuing these vulnerable lives.
The Struggle for Safety
The puppies found refuge in a drainpipe, too scared to come out. Their hunger was evident, so we offered dog food, coaxing them with the promise of safety.
Slowly, one puppy approached, and we managed to secure him. Sadly, his sibling retreated further into the pipe, beyond our reach.
We left food and water, hoping for the best, but despite repeated attempts, the other puppy remained elusive.
Welcoming Balto Home
The puppy we saved, a little boy we named Balto, was around 2-3 months old. His tiny body was infested with fleas, ticks, and worms, which we treated immediately.
Given the freezing Serbian winter, we welcomed him into our small apartment, providing warmth and care. We got him a cozy coat, played with him outside, and even included him in our family Christmas celebration, all while hoping for a loving family to adopt him.
Growing Up and Moving Forward
As Balto grew stronger, he outgrew our small home. With a heavy heart, we took him to a boarding home when he was about 7 months old, where he found a new environment to thrive.
There, he made many friends, including Zipper, a dog his age. Although it was a tough decision, it was the best for Balto.
He now has space to play and grow, but our hope for his adoption remains strong.
