On January 22nd, 2022, my path crossed with Angel’s at a small, rarely frequented resting area near Niš, Serbia on the A1 motorway, the longest and most vital motorway in Serbia.
This resting area, often overlooked by travelers, sees the occasional stop from a passing truck driver but is generally desolate and isolated.
The resting area is fenced, trapping Angel in a perilous situation. She depended solely on the kindness of the few people who stopped there, which was tragically evident from her emaciated condition. It was clear she had been surviving against all odds, clinging to the faint hope that someone would offer her the help she desperately needed.
Discovering Angel on the Motorway
On that cold day, I encountered Angel, a dog who would soon become a beloved member of our rescue family.
It was a bitterly cold day when I first saw her at a motorway parking area. She was desperately begging for food from travelers taking a break. Her arched spine made her easy to recognize, and her pitiful state tugged at my heartstrings.
As I couldn’t stop to pick her up then, I resolved to return later. On our way back around midnight, I stopped again, determined to find her.
The challenge was daunting – I had to scale two large fences and cross a bustling motorway to reach the parking area in the opposite direction. But I did it.
There was a large truck parked in the unlit lot, and while the driver stayed in his cabin, I called out for the dog, hoping she would come to me.
Unfortunately, there was no sign of her that night, and I had to leave with a heavy heart.
A Cold Morning’s Second Chance
The next morning, the weather took a turn for the worse as snow began to fall. Undeterred, I returned to the motorway, driven by the hope of finding Angel.
When I arrived, she was there, emaciated and shivering, still waiting for someone to offer her some food. Her desperation was palpable, and it was clear that she had not eaten much, if anything, since who knows when.
As I approached, I ensured there were no other dogs around. Her eyes lit up with gratitude when she saw me, and as I picked her up, she clung to me, hugging me tightly as if she knew she was finally safe. Her immediate show of affection melted my heart.
The Journey to Safety
With Angel safely in the car, we made our way to the vet. Despite her emaciated state and the harsh conditions she had endured, she tested negative for all diseases.
She was dewormed and treated for fleas and ticks. The vet estimated that she was less than two years old, which meant she still had a lot of life and love to give.
Angel’s relief and gratitude were evident during our ride. She nestled close to me, her tiny body relaxing as she realized she was finally safe.
By the time we reached the pension, where she would temporarily stay in Lisa’s place (Lisa is one of my difficult rescues with a happy ending, fantastically adopted), the snow had already blanketed the ground with a 5cm thick cover. It was a poignant reminder of the harsh conditions from which she had been rescued.
Settling into a New Life
At the pension, Angel began her journey of recovery. She quickly adapted to her new surroundings, showing a resilience and spirit that was truly inspiring. Despite her past hardships, she exhibited a gentle and loving nature, endearing herself to everyone she met.
Her arched spine, while a reminder of her tough past, did not hinder her enthusiasm for life. She relished the warmth and comfort of her new home, enjoying regular meals and the company of other dogs.
Her transformation was remarkable, from a starving, shivering stray to a happy, affectionate companion.
A Bright Future Ahead
Angel’s story is one of hope and resilience. Her journey from a desolate motorway to a loving boarding home symbolizes the impact of compassion and determination. She reminds us of the importance of second chances and the incredible transformations that love and care can bring about.
As Angel continues to thrive, her story serves as an inspiration. She embodies the spirit of our rescue efforts and the joy of seeing a dog overcome adversity to live a happy and fulfilled life.
Angel’s journey is far from over, and she now needs her forever home!

Conclusion
Angel’s rescue was a challenging but immensely rewarding experience. Her unwavering spirit and the affection she has shown since her rescue are testaments to the resilience of animals and the profound impact that kindness and care can have on their lives.
As she continues to flourish, Angel remains a symbol of hope, love, and the power of second chances.
Angel still needs her forever home and before that, she needs to stay fed, safe and healthy.
However, by adopting a dog you save not one but two lives because this way you free up space for another dog to be rescued from the streets.
