Have you ever felt an instant connection through a soulful gaze in a photo shared on social media?
If not, read on for a heartwarming tale. If yes, join us as we recount the experience through the eyes of my friend, Sarah.
This is the story of Srecko, a mixed-breed dog whose name means “Lucky” in English. Indeed, he is very lucky not to be a stray anymore!
The Rescue Network in Nis
In Nis, Serbia, the city’s dog pound has transformed into a place of hope.
It used to be a harsh environment, but now, with rescuers’ control, it has become a sanctuary where dogs are caught, neutered or spayed, and released after full recovery, which takes about two weeks.
The city pound also advertises dogs for adoption on their Facebook page, where some find their forever homes.
Sharing these posts is crucial because you never know who might find their perfect match.
The Discovery of Srecko
Srecko, estimated to be about four years old, is a medium-sized dog standing around 55cm tall and 60cm long, and weighing approximately 20kg.
He is obedient, lively, and active, getting along well with other dogs, people, and kids. He loves cuddles and is easily adaptable.
Wandering the streets of Nis, Srecko was eventually caught by dog catchers and placed in the city pound. It was there that my dear friend Sarah Clift first spotted him through the forementioned Facebook post.
Sarah, who lives in Ringwood, UK, felt an immediate connection with Srecko. She contacted me and arranged for him to be placed in a boarding home, covering his accommodation expenses.
Honoring Julie and Celebrating Sarah: A Passage of Friendship and Support
Julie Robinson, my first UK adopter and a dear friend, passed away on October 6, 2020, at the age of 55.
She adopted my rescue Sara, a three-legged dog, in 2016, and from that moment, Julie became one of my most loyal friends and supporters. No matter what I needed help with, I knew I could always count on her.
We had hoped to meet one day, but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.
At the time of Sara’s adoption, Julie already had a 12-year-old dog named Ruby, who was terminally ill with cancer. Despite her illness, Ruby and Sara became best, inseparable friends.
When Julie passed away, I faced the heartbreaking task of rehoming both Sara and Ruby. I felt an immense responsibility to ensure their safety and happiness, as I owed it to my dear late friend Julie.
In this difficult time, the power of social media proved to be a lifeline. Sharing their story helped spread the word, reaching many people.
I relied on the power of social media and the goodwill of people to change Sara and Ruby’s lives.
That’s when Sarah Clift stepped into our lives.
Sarah’s willingness to help brought immense relief, as I could only do so much from Serbia.
Our three-legged Sara has been doing well in Sarah’s care for four years now. Poor Ruby lost her battle with cancer in 2021.
Since then, Sarah has become not only an adopter but also a good friend, supporter, and helper. Her commitment to rescuing and caring for dogs is unwavering, and her kindness has touched many lives, including mine.
Sarah’s support has been invaluable, and I am grateful for her presence in our rescue journey.
Sarah’s Generosity and Love for Dogs
Sarah’s love for dogs extends beyond Srecko. Sarah has a lot of rescued dogs at home from Ireland, Greece, Egypt, Macedonia and Serbia.
After arranging for Srecko’s safety, she couldn’t bear to let a 16-year-old dog, Bosko, return to the streets. Sarah found a place for grandpa Bosko and has been sponsoring his safety ever since.
Not long after, she fell in love with a large Caucasian Shepherd female named Luna and took on the responsibility of sponsoring her as well.
Sarah’s dedication and generosity have been instrumental in giving these dogs a second chance at life.
Srecko’s Transformation
Srecko’s journey from the streets to a loving environment showcases the resilience and joy that rescue dogs can bring into our lives. He is a very happy and playful dog, thriving in his new surroundings.
Srecko loves people, kids, and other dogs, making him easily adaptable to any family. He enjoys activities like work, play, and walks or runs, fitting well into an active lifestyle.

Srecko’s Readiness for Adoption
Srecko is now neutered, vaccinated, and ready to travel to his new home.
He has transformed from a street dog to a beloved member of our big rescue gang, thanks to the efforts of Sarah and the rescue network in Nis.
Srecko’s story is a testament to the power of compassion and the impact we can have when we step up to help those in need.
Conclusion: Join the Mission
Srecko’s journey from the streets of Nis to safety highlights the importance of rescue efforts and the power of community.
His story reminds us that every act of kindness, no matter how small, can transform a life.
By opening our hearts and homes to rescue dogs, we create a ripple effect of love and hope.
If Srecko’s story has touched your heart, consider adopting him or another rescue dog. If adoption isn’t possible, fostering, sponsoring, or donating can also make a significant difference.

How to Adopt a Dog from a Rescue?
If you decide to adopt Srecko or any other Nevena’s Rescue, please check out this blog 👉 the process of adoption from Nevena’s Rescues.
This is not prying into your life, this is just the measure to value if the dog is a good fit into your lifestyle and household.
These measures are just to make both sides satisfied. We don’t want anyone to suffer, neither a human nor a dog that already went through a horrible past.
However, by adopting a dog you save not one but two lives because this way you free up space for another dog to be rescued from the streets.
Here you can discover more dogs for adoption.
